What Time Is It? Time to Stand Up for Safe Access!
It's been a year since returning from DC , and I would have never thought after having given up safe access to medical cannabis, to help fight for others safe access in and around our Nation's capital that I'd be facing such an aggressive attack on safe access back in the Bay Area. It's really shocking to me. I campaigned for Obama, and even attended his inauguration. It was the most patriotic moment of my life. I remember being so proud to have a President that was going to put science and reason before money and politics. Obama promised during his campaign to end the war on medical cannabis, saying his administration was “not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state [medical marijuana] laws.”
Well here we are, reeling from one of the most severe crack downs on are community ever, with multi-agency task forces being involved in this latest round of federal attacks. Resulting in the closing of some of our oldest and best regulated medical cannabis dispensaries in the Bay Area. Vapor Room, Berkeley Patients Group, Hope Net, Divinity Tree, and some new players that were raising the bar in providing excellent service, such as Medithrive and Shambhala. It's a shame, but we must not be so distraught as to give up without even beginning to fight. We must rise up! We are part of the 99%.
A majority of Americans think medical marijuana should be allowed.* While we have a majority of support on this issue, only a slim margin of that support has actually taken action. I know we can win if we all stand up and start taking action. Contact your local, state, and federal representatives, let them know you support this issue. You are the advocate we've been waiting for. "Members of Congress are more likely to be swayed by concerned citizens who visit, write or call their offices than by the efforts of paid lobbyists. That’s right, citizens have more power than they realize!"* Study up on the facts, and help spread awareness throughout your community. Do you know what the latest research says? Like, did you know that that smoking cannabis (marijuana), even in low doses, effectively alleviates the neuropathy pain associated with HIV/AIDS.* It's time to get educated, and get out the word.
Americans for Safe Access, the largest national member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists and concerned citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research has created the tools necessary to keep moving safe access forward across the nation. Such as The Medical Cannabis Advocate's Training Center, The Medical Cannabis Think Tank and Policy Shop, Raid Center and more. ASA's new iPhone app will help medical marijuana advocates get involved in the fight against the federal crackdown on marijuana, and can even tell them where to locate businesses that support legalization of the drug. Then wherever you are, whenever your ready - Take Action!
But if this latest attack on safe access doesn't motivate you to take a stand, then this community will continue to be attacked and more patients will lose their safe access; the choice is yours. The sooner you stand up and push back, the sooner we'll have secured safe access for all. It's time for you all to stand up. We must gather in our homes, in the streets, on campuses and online to train ourselves in non-violent action and join together in the work of making sure safe access is a permanent part of this countries landscape. If your in California, make sure to attend the California Unity Conference. History is calling; it’s time to step up.
