Medical cannabis bills advance to floor votes
This is great news from ASA's CA Director, Don Duncan! "The Senate Appropriations Committee passed SB 1262 (Correa) SB 1262 was amended to make the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) the regulatory body for commercial medical cannabis activity. ASA lobbied for this change when oversight in the Department of Public health became unpopular with key lawmakers. DCA is the best option on the table for regulation. This is a big win for ASA, GLACA, and patients!" I am proud to have testified at a hearing in support of 1262 a few weeks ago.
The Assembly Appropriations Committee also passed AB 1894 (Ammiano) with more than 100 amendments, most of which are technical and minor. ASA has not had a chance to review those amendments. While ASA applauds the Author’s goals, we still have deep reservations about putting regulatory oversight in the Department of Alcoholic beverage Control. See this blog for more on that topic - http://www.safeaccessnow.org/don_t_regulate_medical_marijuana_like_alcohol
We are having a good year so far in the legislature. Let’s keep it up. Join ASA for our CA Citizen Lobby Day on Monday, August 4. Details to follow.
