The Terpene Tournament was a HUGE HIT!
The Terpene Tournament was a HUGE HIT!
Congrats to the winner of Best Terpene: Oakland Extracts!
Thanks to all our sponsors, contributors and over 100 participants who helped raise the 1st Terpene Tournament to another level!!
Happy to announce that Oakland Extracts came in first for best terpenes with their Red Congolese, which was very fitting being that the tournament was held in Oakland.
Embodying the slogan ‘Terps from the Town’, Oakland Extracts was founded for the community. Born and raised in Oakland, founder Terryn Niles Buxton saw prices climbing with legalization and realized there was a need for people in Oakland to have access to quality cannabis at an affordable price.
As a Black-owned business, Oakland Extracts had struggled to raise enough capital to get licensed and stay in the game. But through a partnership with Jetty Extracts, Oakland was able to relaunch in 2020. Today, the company prides itself on fine-tuning a proprietary technique that allows for maximum terpene retention–that means never adding terps, THC or any other flavorings or additives.
Oakland Extracts is based in Oakland and supports many local organizations including the Bay Area ASA chapter, Operation E.V.A.C, a veterans cannabis support group, and SuperNova Women, which provides POCs with the mentorship and tools they need to succeed as entrepreneurs in this industry.
Oakland Extracts Red Congolese
The legendary African sativa with that sweet, musky aroma that turns heads. A rare pure sativa that wakes you right up without producing intense anxiety. A sense of gentle wellbeing coasts behind the initial sativa charge. But it’s that unique musky smell with a touch of grapefruit that makes the Congo unforgettable.
Moon Made Farms took home 2nd place for their Cherry Moon!!
Moon Made Farms is located in Southern Humboldt County, at the heart of the Emerald Triangle--33.3 linear miles from the Pacific Ocean, 2100 feet in elevation on the leeward of a mountain. The farm has primarily southern exposure on slopes of rock and clay dominant native soil. Their goal is to incorporate the native soil and surrounding biology through onsite composting and introduction of native soil, forest and plant material, and inputs they cultivate, closing loops on the land and utilizing waste streams. The genetics, and ultimately epigenetics of the plant can fully express itself in a way that is intimately tied to this unique environment. The plants become an expression of this place. This is already a proven hypothesis that anyone who has worked with this plant understands: Give this plant a healthy, balanced environment to grow in and it will thrive. Just like people. And people deserve access to plants that are grown as nature intended, in a natural and healthy habitat.

We are feeling immensely grateful for everyone who came through. It's fair to say the two most popular things at the event were the mocktails by Manzanita Naturals and the smoke bubble machine from Terplandia. Each time it turned on, the rooftop of Skylab became a magical scene!
Tony was enthusiastically speaking about and handing out Sonoma Hill Farms and Arcanna terpene rich flowers, along with talking about Werc Shop and his terpene flashcards, which he feels pair perfectly together. Half his table was educational and the other half was for people who wanted to sample and judge terpenes.
The cultivar Sonoma Hills Farm entered was Fernando's Highway.
Sonoma Hills Farm is a premium craft cannabis farm and organic culinary garden nestled on 60-acres in Sonoma Valley’s Petaluma Gap appellation, one of the nation’s premier wine terroirs. Sonoma Hills Farm’s cannabis flower is produced in harmony with nature using regenerative farming techniques and is harvested at its full-term peak potential.
In addition to Sun+Earth certification, the farm’s cannabis was one of first to be recognized as “organic comparable,” as designated by CCOF’s OCal program, which certifies consistency with the uniform standards of the National Organic Program.

Gold Sponsor Naughty Squirrel Farms won a total of three awards, two for/from Lake County recently at the 1st Ever California State Fair Cannabis Competition. They received a gold medal in the Myrcene terpene category for their outdoor grown Lemon Vuitton cultivar (testing at 1.9 percent Myrcene), they were also awarded a Golden Bear commemorating them as the “Best of California” in their respective categories. Naughty Squirrel Farms works with Backroads Distribution as well as Alpaca Distribution getting their award-winning products into 47 different dispensaries, one being the newly opened Cannabis Highway dispensary in Lucerne.
The Werc Shop Cannaroma terpene kits, along with terpene and strain specific inhalers and cartridges were by far Tony's favorite thing to geek out about...he handed out many inhalers and cartridges too.
We are so thrilled and happy and can't wait for the next Terpene Tournament which we will start planning soon. We plan to have education and educational pieces more front and center. There will be more signage, and explanations around terpenes during the intro. As well as ensuring we collect all terpene info + media assets from sponsors and entries for marketing and promotion, and when we announce results, plus have more volunteers. If Tony wouldn't have been stuck behind a booth, he could have been playing host, answering questions, and guiding people more.
At heart this was a medical cannabis benefit, which also highlighted legacy, equity, and compassion, as well as spread education and awareness around terpenes.
Tony has been involved in the cannabis industry for 20+ years, a long-time patient advocate and organizer with Americans for Safe Access (ASA). He’s currently Chair of the Bay Area Safe Access chapter.
He was a plaintiff in ASA’s successful lawsuit against the California Highway Patrol. As an original member of the SF ASA Chapter, he played a role in passing Article 37, SF's medical cannabis law.
Tony has been involved with multiple successful cannabis operations, and political campaigns, including the passing of The Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MCRSA), which was established through a series of bills passed by the California State Legislature in 2015 and 2016, as well as The Brownie Mary and Dennis Peron Act SB 34 in 2019, which allows cannabis to be given out as compassion. He is currently involved in legislative efforts at a local, state, and federal level to expand and strengthen safe access.
